What the published guidance says

Athabasca says students must be enrolled in an AU programme for PLAR and should complete transfer-credit assessment first. Portfolio credit is assessed against programme or course requirements. Its assessment information distinguishes programme-based review from course-based assessment.

Resolve the formal record first

An earlier transcript and an experiential portfolio serve different purposes. Completing the transfer review first can help identify remaining requirements and avoid developing a claim for learning already recognised. Keep your programme plan available while you prepare the next stage.

If you continue taking courses during preparation, discuss the overlap with an adviser. You do not want to prepare a substantial experiential claim while enrolling in study that covers the same learning without first understanding how the two would interact.

An example to think through

A learner may have transferred business modules and also gained additional management learning at work. The first task is to confirm what the transcript has already contributed. Only then can the learner identify a meaningful area for PLAR preparation instead of repeating material that is already in the programme record.

This is an illustrative preparation example, not a past applicant’s story or an approved assessment outcome.

Three questions to take forward

1

Has the transfer assessment of my earlier formal study been completed?

2

What requirements remain in my AU programme?

3

Could planned courses overlap with the learning I want assessed?

Availability, costs and ToHave’s role

Requirements can change with the programme, subject, application date and your own evidence. Check the institution’s current information before relying on a route. Admission, academic credit, a complete qualification and professional registration are different decisions.

ToHave can help organise genuine evidence and support a suitable application where permitted. Our service fee is £100 GBP, payable at the end of the work. Any institution charges and agreed external costs are separate. Read the service conditions and costs. The institution decides the academic outcome; our support does not guarantee approval.
