What the published guidance says

Middlesex lists undergraduate and postgraduate top-up options alongside its prior-learning information. Its academic credit framework distinguishes awards such as a bachelor’s degree, postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and master’s degree. APEL assesses whether earlier learning is sufficiently equivalent.

Do not use “top-up” as a promise

A named top-up route usually needs particular prior learning or qualifications. It should not be treated as a general invitation to replace a whole degree with work experience. Read the entry information for the actual course, then ask how your records fit it.

If your background is less straightforward, prepare a separate enquiry about prior learning. State the award you want, the qualifications you already hold and the parts based on experience. A clear starting point makes it easier to distinguish an admissions question from a request for credit.

An example to think through

Someone with a higher education diploma might be asking about progression to an honours degree. Someone with an earlier postgraduate award might be asking about a different level of study. Using the same phrase, “I want to top up my experience,” hides those differences. A one-page qualification timeline makes the conversation much clearer.

This is an illustrative preparation example, not a past applicant’s story or an approved assessment outcome.

Three questions to take forward

1

What prior award does the named top-up course require?

2

Is my question about entry, a later stage or exemption from modules?

3

Which official records show the level and scope of earlier study?

Availability, costs and ToHave’s role

Requirements can change with the programme, subject, application date and your own evidence. Check the institution’s current information before relying on a route. Admission, academic credit, a complete qualification and professional registration are different decisions.

ToHave can help organise genuine evidence and support a suitable application where permitted. Our service fee is £100 GBP, payable at the end of the work. Any institution charges and agreed external costs are separate. Read the service conditions and costs. The institution decides the academic outcome; our support does not guarantee approval.
