What the published guidance says

RMIT distinguishes recognition of prior learning from credit for prior study and from entry pathways. Its student guidance says credit must relate closely to the programme and that permitted amounts depend on the study level. Previous employment and professional learning may be relevant to RPL.

Identify both the level and the kind of decision

State whether you are considering vocational study, an undergraduate qualification or a postgraduate programme. Then say whether your question concerns entry, earlier assessed study or experiential learning. This prevents a general RPL enquiry from concealing several different processes.

A professional certificate can be relevant without automatically being equivalent to a university unit. Keep the course content, assessment method and what you learned available for review. The programme team needs to establish the relationship rather than infer it from the certificate title.

An example to think through

A technician may have on-the-job learning, a formal vocational award and additional short courses. Each can tell a different part of the learning story. Asking which process applies to each part is more useful than assuming a single conversion from work history to a higher qualification.

This is an illustrative preparation example, not a past applicant’s story or an approved assessment outcome.

Three questions to take forward

1

What study level am I targeting?

2

Is this an entry, prior-study credit or experiential-learning enquiry?

3

What can I show about the content and assessment of earlier training?

Availability, costs and ToHave’s role

Requirements can change with the programme, subject, application date and your own evidence. Check the institution’s current information before relying on a route. Admission, academic credit, a complete qualification and professional registration are different decisions.

ToHave can help organise genuine evidence and support a suitable application where permitted. Our service fee is £100 GBP, payable at the end of the work. Any institution charges and agreed external costs are separate. Read the service conditions and costs. The institution decides the academic outcome; our support does not guarantee approval.
