What the published guidance says

The Herts CATS information describes combining recognised prior learning or experience with modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level. It allows flexible accumulation of credit towards an award. The APL guidance explains that recognition still depends on relevant learning and institutional requirements.

Start with the destination, then place the credits

An award is more than a total. The subject, academic levels and required components have to form an appropriate programme. Before choosing attractive individual modules, explain what qualification and learning goal you are trying to reach.

Keep a draft plan with three columns: learning you want assessed, study you expect to complete and points that need confirmation. This gives an adviser a practical document to discuss. Do not describe the draft as an approved route or assume credit from one plan will be accepted unchanged in another.

An example to think through

A working professional interested in a management-focused award may have study from different providers and relevant employment learning. The planning task is to see whether those pieces support a consistent academic direction. A spare credit total is not, by itself, evidence that all the requirements for a qualification have been met.

This is an illustrative preparation example, not a past applicant’s story or an approved assessment outcome.

Three questions to take forward

1

What award and subject focus would the combined study support?

2

Which required learning would still need new study?

3

Who must approve the proposed combination of credit and modules?

Availability, costs and ToHave’s role

Requirements can change with the programme, subject, application date and your own evidence. Check the institution’s current information before relying on a route. Admission, academic credit, a complete qualification and professional registration are different decisions.

ToHave can help organise genuine evidence and support a suitable application where permitted. Our service fee is £100 GBP, payable at the end of the work. Any institution charges and agreed external costs are separate. Read the service conditions and costs. The institution decides the academic outcome; our support does not guarantee approval.
