What the published guidance says

Sheffield Hallam describes recognition of formal and experiential learning for course entry or credit. It asks applicants to explain their experiences and demonstrate learning at the appropriate level. Decisions depend on the course and the evidence, rather than experience alone.

Choose a course before collecting everything

A general folder labelled “my experience” is difficult to evaluate. A course gives the enquiry a purpose: you can ask which learning is relevant and what standard must be demonstrated. That also helps avoid sending sensitive or unnecessary material.

Begin with a short learning history covering employment, formal study and significant training. Use dates and distinguish completion from attendance. The aim of the first enquiry is not to prove every detail immediately, but to find out whether there is an appropriate process to pursue.

An example to think through

A person moving from community work into a related field of study might have volunteer training, practical responsibilities and earlier college learning. Listing those separately helps a course team explain what could be relevant. It does not establish that every activity qualifies for credit or that an application will succeed.

This is an illustrative preparation example, not a past applicant’s story or an approved assessment outcome.

Three questions to take forward

1

What course would I actually like to study?

2

Is my immediate need an entry decision or recognition within the course?

3

Which evidence can I describe clearly without sharing unnecessary personal information?

Availability, costs and ToHave’s role

Requirements can change with the programme, subject, application date and your own evidence. Check the institution’s current information before relying on a route. Admission, academic credit, a complete qualification and professional registration are different decisions.

ToHave can help organise genuine evidence and support a suitable application where permitted. Our service fee is £100 GBP, payable at the end of the work. Any institution charges and agreed external costs are separate. Read the service conditions and costs. The institution decides the academic outcome; our support does not guarantee approval.
