What the published guidance says

TRU’s Open Learning information describes portfolio assessment, challenge examinations and other PLAR methods. Its pathway guidance distinguishes competency-based portfolios, course-based portfolios, challenge exams and a Credit Bank. Access and programme fit need to be discussed with an adviser.

Choose the question before choosing the format

Do you want to demonstrate the outcomes of one course, broader competencies or learning from an already reviewed training programme? Answering that first can prevent you from developing a portfolio for a question another assessment method addresses more directly.

Keep records of what remains in the programme. Recognition that produces unspecified elective credit may not solve a requirement for a particular course. Ask about that distinction before assuming that every possible PLAR route has the same effect on your study plan.

An example to think through

A learner with documented professional training could first check whether the training is covered by an existing credit arrangement. Another learner may need a course-based assessment because the learning is individual. Neither should assume that a generic portfolio template is the university’s preferred route for their situation.

This is an illustrative preparation example, not a past applicant’s story or an approved assessment outcome.

Three questions to take forward

1

Am I demonstrating course outcomes or broader competencies?

2

Has my previous training already been reviewed through a credit arrangement?

3

What kind of remaining programme requirement would the credit support?

Availability, costs and ToHave’s role

Requirements can change with the programme, subject, application date and your own evidence. Check the institution’s current information before relying on a route. Admission, academic credit, a complete qualification and professional registration are different decisions.

ToHave can help organise genuine evidence and support a suitable application where permitted. Our service fee is £100 GBP, payable at the end of the work. Any institution charges and agreed external costs are separate. Read the service conditions and costs. The institution decides the academic outcome; our support does not guarantee approval.
