What the published guidance says
UMPI describes portfolio review as evidence of college-level learning aligned to course objectives. Its guidance includes practical and theoretical learning and expects college-level writing readiness. The policy sets eligibility conditions and requires other available test options to be considered.
Make the explanation travel beyond one workplace
A specialist task may be familiar to you but unfamiliar to the reader. Explain the ideas behind the method and what you would change in another context. This helps distinguish a learned principle from a routine that only works under one employer’s instructions.
Keep the narrative readable. Use a clear claim, a concrete example and a reference to the supporting item. A large appendix does not remove the need to explain the relationship between the evidence and the learning being assessed. The university determines the appropriate format and standard.
An example to think through
Someone who maintains a customer database might explain data quality, access decisions and how errors are identified. A screenshot alone would show a system, while an account of the reasoning could show learning. Employer permission and removal of personal data would still be needed before sharing any example.
This is an illustrative preparation example, not a past applicant’s story or an approved assessment outcome.
Three questions to take forward
What principles explain the practical work I am presenting?
Can I show how the learning applies outside one narrow routine?
Is my writing clear enough for an assessor to follow the evidence?
Availability, costs and ToHave’s role
Requirements can change with the programme, subject, application date and your own evidence. Check the institution’s current information before relying on a route. Admission, academic credit, a complete qualification and professional registration are different decisions.
ToHave can help organise genuine evidence and support a suitable application where permitted. Our service fee is £100 GBP, payable at the end of the work. Any institution charges and agreed external costs are separate. Read the service conditions and costs. The institution decides the academic outcome; our support does not guarantee approval.
