What the published guidance says

UMPI’s policy sets a combined prior-learning maximum of 15 credits for associate programmes and 30 for bachelor’s programmes. It normally requires matriculation and says available test options should be used before portfolio assessment. Portfolio credit does not satisfy residency requirements.

Look at the degree gap before choosing the assessment

Ask where potential credit would fit in your programme. There is little value in preparing evidence for knowledge that duplicates credit already on your record or does not meet a remaining requirement. Review previous study and possible examination routes before deciding that a portfolio is the best option.

The limit is a ceiling across the relevant forms of assessment, not an individual award promise. Your evidence, the course equivalence and the programme requirements still need to be reviewed. Record any remaining university study separately from possible prior-learning credit.

An example to think through

A learner with earlier examination credit may have less room left under a combined PLA limit than someone starting without it. Two people should therefore not expect the same portfolio allowance merely because both are studying for a bachelor’s degree. A personal credit inventory makes that difference visible.

This is an illustrative preparation example, not a past applicant’s story or an approved assessment outcome.

Three questions to take forward

1

Is my intended award an associate or a bachelor’s degree?

2

Have I already received credit through another prior-learning method?

3

Would the proposed credit fit a remaining requirement without duplicating learning?

Availability, costs and ToHave’s role

Requirements can change with the programme, subject, application date and your own evidence. Check the institution’s current information before relying on a route. Admission, academic credit, a complete qualification and professional registration are different decisions.

ToHave can help organise genuine evidence and support a suitable application where permitted. Our service fee is £100 GBP, payable at the end of the work. Any institution charges and agreed external costs are separate. Read the service conditions and costs. The institution decides the academic outcome; our support does not guarantee approval.
